First of all, I would like to thank the Silver Special Collections Library, University of Vermont for making the original transcriptions available. Without them, this version would not exist.

License

The diary entries (i.e. the pages 1861.html, 1862.html, 1863.html 1864.html 1865.html) are licensed under a Creative Commons CC BY 4.0 license, following the original license. Please credit Silver Special Collections Library, University of Vermont for the original versions and please credit Chris Culy for these html versions.

Changes

The CC BY 4.0 license requires the listing of any substantive changes to the source version. I started with the plain text versions of the transcriptions and I have made a variety of changes, as detailed below. The original transcriptions have not been significantly changed.

Text modifications

These are the modifications I made to the text of the transcriptions.

• Entries were grouped into files by year.
• Corrected a few French and Italian newspaper clippings
• Transcribed some Italian clippings.
• Blank lines have been deleted where necessary to group text from one day into a unit.
• Deleted page numbers and information marking the beginning of physical volumes
• Removed word-breaking hyphens at the end of lines. Due to spelling differences between the mid-1800s and now, it is not always possible to be sure whether a hyphen is normally word-internal. For example "to-day" was a common spelling.

Markup

All the html markup is mine. In addition to the html skeleton and navigation for each year, I added the following semantically motivated markup to the transcriptions.

• All the entries are contained in div#entries
• Before the first of entry of a month, there is an anchor element whose name is the month.
• Each individual entry is contained in a div.entry
• Each entry starts with a div.dateline, whose text is the entry heading from the transcription. It's title attribute is the actual date of the entry, in YYYY-MM-DD format.
• The text of the div.date is preceded by a link to the entry as well as an empty time element whose datetime attribute is the actual date of the entry, in YYYY-MM-DD format.
• Original transcriber notes are contained in span.tn elements
• My notes are contained in div.cuc elements
• There are 3 types of special cases that I have indicated via markup:
  • External materials added to the diaries, mainly newspaper clippings. These are contained in details.clippings elements. The summary element is empty unless it contains "TBD" to indicate the presences of an untranscribed clipping.
  • Pages by Caroline Crane Marsh that are not part of the entry narrative, usually extra descriptions. These are contained in details.insertions elements with empty summary elements.
  • Drawings by Caroline Crane Marsh. These are contained in details.drawing elements with empty summary elements.
